WHIP IT BABY!

A little over a month or so ago I started using unrefined, organic coconut oil as a skin moisturizer.  It blows my mind how many compliments I get when people get a whiff of me walking by!  Who woulda thunk it!?!?  So I said to myself as soon as I used the last little bit of my Murad facial moisturizer and eye cream that I would just make my own.  One, because I am doing my best to live a natural, clean life and be more conscious of what I’m putting on my body and two, because I am looking for all kinds of ways to cut back on store bought products as a way to live a little more frugally.  LOL.  #REALTALK As a mother of a college student and one right behind him this year, I have just come to the realization that I have to live smarter if I want to obtain my goals.  Cutting back on a lot of the products I buy will be a start!  Lucky for me, I follow some really cool chicks who make this whole natural way of living look super easy.  So I decided to try Nikisha’s recipe for a DIY body butter cream from her blog pineapple.life (which by the way is every bit of wonderful!)

Prior to making her body butter, I tried out a recipe that I found on Pinterest.   Although I really like it, I guess the heat wave we’ve been experiencing here in LA caused the cream to turn into a liquid instead of a solid.  I can’t really remember what I did differently when I made Nikisha’s recipe but let’s just say I had much better luck with hers!  I also got a little adventurous and decided to make a facial cream which I’m pretty happy with too.  So here’s what I used for both:

Wellness(Sidenote: Instead of the Thrive Coconut Oil, I used Simple Truth because I wasn’t quite sure if Thrive’s was unrefined, cold pressed)

DIY Whipped Body Butter

  • 1/4 cup of unrefined shea butter
  • 1/4 cup of raw unrefined cocoa butter
  • 1/4 cup of extra virgin, unrefined, cold pressed coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup of Almond oil
  •  10 drops of Young Living Frankincense Essential Oil
  • 10 drops of Young Living Lavender Essential Oil
  • DIY Whipped Facial Cream

  • 1/2 cup of unrefined shea butter
  • 2 TB of Sweet Almond Oil
  • 10 drops of Young Living Frankincense Essential Oil
  • 5 drops of Young Living Lavender Essential Oil
  • Instructions:

  • You can use a double-boiler or a pot and a metal or glass bowl.  I used a saucepan and a silver mixing bowl.  Add all the ingredients (except essential oils) into the mixing bowl and place it over the pot filled ¼ the way full with boiling water.  Turn the fire to medium-low heat, and slowly melt the oils until its nice and hot (not boiling).  Don’t heat too long or you’ll destroy the nutrients in the oils.
  • Once the oils are melted and mixed together, remove from the burner and place in the freezer on top of a pot holder and allow to cool and return to a solid (not hard) form. This takes about 15-20 minutes. Don’t freeze the mixture. OR you can place it in the refrigerator for about an 90 minutes.  Your preference.
  • Once solid-looking remove from the freezer. Use the whisk attachment on your mixer, whip the mixture on speed 3 for just a little bit to soften then add in the essential oils.  Continue to whip on speed 3 until soft and looks like buttery whip cream (approximately 10 minutes).
  • Scoop it out and into your mason jar and Voila!  Store at room temperature in a cabinet.
  • (The steps are the same for both creams)

    There are so many natural facial cream recipes on Pinterest but I chose to go with the one WITHOUT coconut oil.  I have pretty normal skin so I didn’t want to chance adding too much oil to face and breaking out.

    So just a sidenote, because I didn’t use any coconut oil in my facial cream, it maintained the whip!  However, the body butter solidified JUST  a tad bit because its been so hot in LA.  It hasn’t turned into a liquid but its not as whipped as when I first made it.  But I don’t care!  It feels and smells heavenly!  I plan to stop buying lotions and will hopefully get the entire Fam Bam on board!  I’ll keep you posted!  Until then, let me know how yours comes out!
