Tell us a little about yourself?
I am a wife, mother, daughter, friend and judge living in Dallas, Texas doing my best to keep it all together as I inch closer to the big 50! I grew up in Tampa, Florida, attended college in Atlanta, Georgia (Spelman College), then onto Houston, Texas (Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University) for law school and remained in Texas after graduation and eventually landed in Dallas, Texas because of work. I am married to a great guy from Los Angeles and together we are very busy with life, our careers and are blessed to be raising two wonderful children together. We have a daughter Zoë that is in the 7th grade and a son Zane that is in the 3rd grade.
What is the one most important thing you hope to teach your child/children?
The most important thing I hope to teach my children is the importance of being resilient. It’s okay to get knocked down (and you will get knocked down in this lifetime) but it is most important to always get up. I hope to also teach them to be responsible contributing members of society. I have so many things that I hope to teach them that it is hard to name just a few, lastly I hope they will learn the importance of staying true to themselves and never letting what else somebody else says to distract them from their goals, whatever those may be.
What are your 3 best character traits?
My three best character traits that best describe me are that I am loyal, hardworking, fair and ambitious, wait I think that is four! 🙂
What are you most looking forward to?
I am most looking forward to summer vacation this summer!!! We make it strictly about family and with no electronics!
What are some of your favorite things?
Some of my favorite things are traveling, shopping, handbags and I absolutely love makeup! I am truly a girlie girl.
What or who inspires you?
My children inspire me – my job as their mother is one of the hardest jobs that I have ever had to do and I take it very seriously as you don’t get an opportunity for a do-over.
How would you describe your style?
My style can best be described as conservative chic!
Do you have a favorite recipe?
My favorite recipe is almost anything which involves seafood – growing up in Florida, my fondest memories are of fishing in my backyard then having my parents to cook the fish that me and my siblings actually caught or often crabbing for blue crabs at the beach and having crab/seafood boils thereafter!
What makes your soul happy?
Makes my soul happy –to know and believe in the following quote, “But for the grace of God there go I…”
What’s your proudest mommie moment?
My proudest mommie moment is listening to my children debate about which college they will attend from the time they starting speaking!
Where is your favorite place to spend time with your family?
My favorite place to spend time with my family is in Naples, Florida – it’s always relaxing by the beach.
I personally believe we learn from both our strengths AND weaknesses. What are your strengths/weaknesses as a mother?
Strengths as a mother, is knowing again that my job as a mother is the most important job that I have while on this earth, my weakness as a mother is having to constantly attempt to achieve balance of work/life issues as it relates to motherhood.
Now tell us, what’s in your purse Fly Mommie?
A wallet, lip gloss of course and a checkbook!
I have to be honest…I was pretty horrible with my skincare routine in my thirties but I have learned to not neglect myself! What beauty brands do you use and what’s your beauty routine?
I am a “product groupie”. I love to try new products so if I read about something and seems as though it may work, chances are that I have purchased it. Currently, I am using Skinceuticals in my daily beauty routine, it does wonders. I just try to make sure that I wash my face both morning and night no matter how tired I am from late night reading. Makeup products that I like are all over the place, I like brands such as Laura Mercier, Channel and Bobbi Brown, mostly make up lines that feature enhancement of one’s natural looks. I believe you work with what God gave you.
What advice would you give your 21 year old self?
To not listen to naysayers, to not second guess yourself (listen to your gut) and to surround yourself with those that truly have your best interests at heart.
What is your mantra?
This has just developed for me but it is a quote that love from the late Dr. Maya Angelou – “When people show you who they are, believe them the first time.”
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about our legal system and ensuring everyone regardless of their income has equal access to our court system. And once those individuals have equal access to our court system, that each is afforded their day in court with a fair, impartial judge presiding over their cause of action and the ability to have their matter decided by a jury of their peers.
Do you belong to or donate your time to any charitable/philanthropic organizations and if so, which ones?
Organizations that I belong to or donate my time to are numerous but I’m currently very active with both of my children’s parent teacher association organizations, Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, local and national bar associations, my church and beloved sorority – Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Why you’re a QUINKENZO Fly Mommie…
Monica is Fly because she has this calm, inviting personality and is so easy to be around. What I love is that there may be a misconception about her because she’s a Judge, but on a personal level, she never seems to take things too seriously. So her easy going spirit is such a breath of fresh air! She’s stunning, ambitious, funny, smart and her style sense is impeccable I have to say. Not to mention her gorgeous smile and Fly haircut is loved by many but what is really dope and oh so Fly about Monica is she obviously works reeeeally hard as a Judge in Texas, she is raising two active, busy kids, she is married to an awesome guy, probably hardly ever sits still YET still manages to look FLAWLESS! Now that’s Fly!
